Message from the Program Director

Our mission is to educate neurologists who provide excellent, competent, compassionate, patient-centered care. Our goal is to prepare you well for the challenges you will face in the ever-changing field of neurology and the complex world of healthcare. Our philosophy of residency training is that you learn best in an environment of respect, information sharing and collaboration. We strongly believe in resident participation: When residency education is on the table, we want you at the table.

When choosing a program for your residency, you should look at value, experience and outcomes.  All neurology residencies require 36 months of training. It is the milestones you reach in that time that determine the value. Your training in settings like our university hospital, our county hospital, the VA hospital and various private hospitals will lead to accelerated learning and growth through good working environments, hands-on practice, subspecialty exposure, a well-designed curriculum, and close mentorship through resident mentors and nationally recognized faculty. We foster academic activity, offer travel funds to conferences and provide ample opportunities for involvement in research and teaching.

The experience of your residency will be one of the most memorable times of your life, a time where you expand your knowledge and horizon, develop your skills as a neurologist and form friendships and relationships that will last a lifetime. Our residents are a tight knit group that values each other and engages in their residency program and beyond. We maintain strong ties with our graduates as they move on to make a difference in the lives of people affected by neurologic disease and see them as part of our University of Minnesota Neurology family.

The exposure to a variety of care delivery systems and diverse patient populations in conjunction with engaged and dedicated faculty has resulted in top notch academic careers in research or education as well as strong commitment to community practice and service. We encourage each resident to tailor learning experiences to meet individual goals and become a future leader in the field of neurology.

We look forward to welcoming you in Minnesota.

Ezgi Tiryaki, MD
Residency Program Director
