Endovascular Surgical Neuroradiology (ESN) Fellowship

This “NeuroIntervention” fellowship at the University of Minnesota and affiliated hospitals provides two years of training emphasizing endovascular procedures, including catheter-based thrombolysis, embolization, and stent placement for various cerebrovascular diseases.  Our program faculty includes internationally known interventionalists who have pioneered several endovascular techniques.  Training takes place at Hennepin County Medical Center (HCMC) and University of Minnesota Medical Center, Fairview (UMMC).

Research

Fellows are required to execute at least one research project a year.  By the fourth month of the fellowship year, fellows are expected to identify their projects and to select faculty mentors.  Fellows formally present their projects at a graduation/educational symposium in May/June.  A very active epidemiological, clinical, and basic research program focused on cerebrovascular diseases provides opportunities for research.

Conferences

There are regular conferences which are attended by all ESN and vascular fellows in the program.

1. Weekly didactic lecture given by one of the faculty expressly for the fellows.
2. Departmental grand rounds weekly.
3. Stroke research conference weekly.
4. Weekly neuroimaging conference: jointly with the neurosurgery and neuroradiology departments.

DEPARTMENT AND FACULTY

This fellowship joins the Department of Neurology’s other graduate training programs, which have continuously graduated Neurology and subspecialty trainees since the 1940s.  Among the significant strengths of our program are the range and depth of the clinical experience provided at several teaching hospitals (Hennepin County Medical Center and University of Minnesota Medical Center-Fairview for this program); the devotion of the full-time faculty at each of these hospitals to teaching, patient care, and scholarship; and the focus on both clinical and basic research in the midst of a first-rank neuroscience community.

 DURATION OF FELLOWSHIP: 2 years

NUMBER OF FELLOWS PER YEAR: 4 (2 junior and 2 senior)

APPLICATION PROCESS

Applicants must have completed:

An ACGME-accredited vascular neurology fellowship; or

Alternatively, applicants may be completing a U.S. neurosurgery residency; or

Alternatively, applicants may have completed a U.S. radiology residency and subsequently be completing a neuroradiology fellowship.

Qualified applicants should submit the following before April 30th:

• A curriculum vitae
• Three letters of recommendation
• A personal statement of interest in this subspecialty
• Visa status (except in very rare instances, only J-1 visas sponsored by ECFMG are accepted)
