Vaction and Sick Leave
(Please see Part A of the Resident’s Manual for complete information).

All residents/fellows will be given one month of leave to be used for both vacation and sick leave. Any leave that exceeds one month will be unpaid and must be made up at the end of training. There is no carry over of vacation or sick time from one year to the next.

For sick time, residents are responsible for notifying the residency program coordinator, the senior resident at their site, and the appropriate faculty member of their rotation as soon as possible.

Residents are given 3 weeks (21 days) of vacation per academic year. Resident vacations are scheduled into the rotation schedule at the beginning of the academic year, and are not flexible. Finding coverage for any vacation requests made after the yearly rotation schedule has been finalized is the resident's responsibility.

Residents are allowed to take one week of vacation during ambulatory and elective rotations. Once week means Sunday through the following Saturday, which is a full seven days. Any exception to this one full week policy must be approved by the program director. Vacations are not allowed during certain rotations including inpatient rotations at Fairview University Medical Center, Hennepin County Medical Center and the Veterans Affairs Medical Center.

Residents who are graduating from the residency program are allowed to take vacation during one of the last two weeks of their residency. Please plan accordingly and save a week of vacation if you wish to use it at the end of the academic year.
