| The Stroke Center is a major initiative of the University of Minnesota. The center was established in mid-2006 as a world-class, regional resource for treatment, education, and research relating to stroke. In the Twin Cities metropolitan area, there are 5000 strokes per year and about 1000 deaths from stroke.

The mission of the center incorporates five values:
- Clinical Service - to provide the expertise and highest quality of clinical services, which are supported by evidenced-based medical knowledge, that match the specific needs of the individual patient with stroke.
- Collaboration - to provide an environment where the collaboration among highly skilled professionals results in provision of the best and most cost effective treatment of cerebrovascular disease.
- Public Education - to actively support and offer patient, physician, and community education initiatives to reduce the incidence and burden of cerebrovascular diseases.
- Medical Education - to provide education and training of medical students, residents, fellows and faculty that focuses on all aspects of caring for patients with cerebrovascular diseases through accredited training programs.
- Research - to conduct research in its own laboratories and clinics and support and coordinate research projects conducted by National Institutes of Health, American Heart Association, and research foundations through research grants and cooperative agreements.
When to call 911
Stroke is an emergency! The sooner the patient gets to the hospital, the better the chances for effective treatment. Call 911 for any of the following:
- Sudden numbness or weakness of the face, arm or leg, especially on one side of the body
- Sudden confusion, trouble speaking or understanding
- Sudden trouble seeing in one or both eyes
- Sudden trouble walking, dizziness, loss of balance or coordination
- Sudden, severe headache with no known cause
